2 New Subspecialty Focused Comprehensive Courses

Building on the success of last year, our popular comprehensive ORL course will again feature two separate subspecialty tracks. Each will provide 4.5 hours of focused material to allow for a deeper dive into the content of two important ORL subspecialties. Whether you are looking to enhance and reinforce your current knowledge base or expand and learn about an area of ORL nursing that is new to you, both courses promise to provide rich, evidence based, practical material from seasoned and dedicated faculty. Each course is ideal for the advance practice nurse practicing in otolaryngology or for the seasoned ORL nurse seeking a thorough review. 

Comprehensive Head and Neck Cancer (In person only)

Thursday, October 9 at 7:30am to 12:00pm

Cost: $200

This course will provide 4.5-hour of content rich material to provide a comprehensive exploration of Adult Head and Neck Cancer through the lens of otolaryngology nursing. Course curriculum will include:  
  • Overview of cancer including the cancer cell, cancer spread, staging, grading and differentiation, histology, risk factors and goals of therapy
  • Treatment modalities including radiation, adjuvant therapy, chemotherapy agents, toxicities and types, surgical intervention, immunotherapy, along with outcomes and restorative procedures
  • A thorough review of Head and Neck Cancer types encompassing anatomy, diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, nasopharynx, hypopharynx, larynx, esophagus, salivary glandsthyroid, skin and skull base


Comprehensive Pediatric Otolaryngology (In person only)

Thursday, October 9th at 7:30am to 12:00pm

This content-rich 4.5-hour course will provide a comprehensive exploration into pediatric ear, nose, and throat disorders and their management with a review of anatomy, etiology, symptoms, diagnostic evaluation and management. Topics covered will include pediatric focused curriculum on:
  • Pediatric Otology - congenital anomalies, otitis media/effusion, otitis externa, eustachian tube disfunction, cerumen impactions, foreign bodies
  • Hearing - pediatric considerations, screening and testing, congenital hearing loss, hearing aids (FM, air, cochlear implantation)
  • Pediatric Nasal, sinus, nasopharyngeal disease - Allergy, sinus, adenoids, turbinate, fracture, foreign body, deviations, epistaxis
  • Oropharyngeal - tonsil disease, foreign body, epilith, tongue/lip tie, salivary, cleft lip/palate, dysphagia, VPI and speech
  • Lumps and bumps of the head and neck - lymph nodes, branchial cleft, thyroglossal, lymphangioma, hemangioma, pilomatrixoma, dermoids, malignancy
  • Airway concerns in Children - choanal atresia, croup, malacia, vocal cord paralysis, airway lesions, craniofacial considerations, tracheotomy

Basic Otology Skills Lab (In person only)

Thursday, October 9th at 8:00–10:30am

Cost: $150

This 2.5 hour otology skills lab offers a blend of didactic instruction and hands-on training, emphasizing anatomy, physiology, diagnosis, triage, and treatment interventions using portable microscopy. Participants will have the opportunity to refine their otology skills and acquire knowledge while practicing procedures, including:
  • otoscopic examination
  • cerumen and foreign body removal
  • ear drop administration
  • post-operative otologic care
  • high and low fidelity models and clinical equipment will be used to simulate real-world scenarios.
Target Audience: Nurses, advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants with basic knowledge in otology and wish to deepen their expertise in basic otology interventions and procedures. 


Advanced Otology Skills Lab (In person only)

Thursday, October 9th at 1:00–5:30pm

Cost: $200

This 4-hour Otology Skills Lab offers an interactive blend of didactic instruction and hands-on training focused on advanced otologic care. The course will review key concepts in ear anatomy and physiology, diagnosis, triage, and treatment interventions using portable microscopy. Participants will have the opportunity to refine their clinical skills and deepen their knowledge while performing procedures:
  •  pressure equalizing (PE) tube insertion
  • intratympanic steroid injections
  • ear bolstering
  • basic mastoid debridement. 
  • both high- and low-fidelity simulation models will be used to create a realistic and supportive learning environment.
Target Audience: Advanced practice nurses and physician assistants with basic to intermediate knowledge of otomicroscopy procedures and wish to deepen their knowledge and expertise 


Tracheostomy Skills Lab (In person only)

Friday, October 10th at 7:00–10:00am

Cost $200

The Tracheostomy Skills Lab is a 4-hour course that integrates didactic instruction with hands-on training using high-fidelity mannequins. The curriculum covers airway/tracheal anatomy and physiology, indications for tracheostomy, routine care, and emergency interventions. The course includes focused instruction on both pediatric and adult populations, as well as education on laryngectomy care. Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge and practical experience in:
  • managing acute tracheostomy complications
  • performing tracheostomy tube changes
  • providing suctioning and stoma care
  • maintaining an artificial airway 
  • High and low fidelity models and clinical equipment will be used to simulate real-world scenarios.
Target Audience: Nurses, advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants with basic to intermediate knowledge of tracheostomy management and wish to deepen their knowledge and expertise.


Suturing and Incision & Drainage (I&D) Course (In person only)

Friday, October 10th – Didactic at 9:50–10:50am; Lab at 2:00–4:00pm

Cost $150

This 3-hour skills lab provides a comprehensive introduction to suturing techniques and incision and drainage (I&D) procedures commonly encountered in outpatient and ENT settings. Through a combination of didactic instruction and practical exercises using high fidelity simulation models, participants will gain the knowledge and confidence needed to perform basic wound closure and abscess management. Led by experienced instructors, participants will build confidence and refine their skills in Wound assessment and preparation;  local anesthesia techniques; instrument handling and knot tying; simple interrupted, running, and deep dermal suturing techniques; indications and technique for incision and drainage of abscesses; post-procedure wound care and patient education. Participants will practice procedures using synthetic and/or high-fidelity models under the guidance of experienced clinical instructors.
Target Audience: Nurses, advanced practice providers, and physician assistants with basic to intermediate knowledge seeking to enhance their procedural skills in suturing and I&D procedural skills. 


Scoping Course (In person only)

Saturday, October 11th at 8:00am–12:10pm

Cost $200

The Scoping Course is a dynamic 4-hour scoping skills lab to elevate your clinical skills through hands-on practice under expert guidance. The first 1.5 hours include didactic instruction reviewing normal anatomy pathophysiology, clinical applications, diagnoses, and interventions with a focus on identification of abnormal pathology. Whether you're new to the field or refining your expertise, this course is tailored to perfect your scoping skills. Perform nasal endoscopies and flexible laryngoscopies on live participants under the guidance of seasoned instructors. Gain invaluable knowledge and practical experience to excel in your clinical practice.

Target Audience: Advanced practice nurses and physician assistants who wish to deepen their expertise in advanced scoping interventions. It is ideal for those looking to practice, refine, or acquire new skills in nasal endoscopy and nasopharyngeal laryngoscopy.


Epistaxis Skills Lab (In person only)

Saturday, October 11th at 3:40–5:45pm

Cost $150

This 2-hour skills lab combines didactic instruction with hands-on training to strengthen your clinical approach to managing epistaxis in the adult and pediatric population.  Participants will review relevant anatomy, pathophysiology, diagnostic considerations, and evidence-based treatment interventions, all aligned with current clinical guidelines.

Led by experienced instructors, the lab offers an opportunity to build confidence and refine techniques in the following interventions: epistaxis prevention strategies; medical management of nose bleeds; use of nasal endoscopy to guide treatment; nasal cautery techniques; and nasal packing including non-dissolvable and dissolvable materials. Cadavers and low fidelity models will be used to simulate real life experiences. 

Target Audience:  Advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants of all levels who are involved in managing the patient with epistaxis.
